Description

I used the literal definition of heat fusion (also known as heat welding) and applied it to interpret the theme of ‘Fusion’

Heat fusion is a technique used to join one piece of thermoplastic to another, using heat and pressure, to create a singular solid form.

I began by cutting individual pieces of thermoplastic and using an art knife to create leaf shapes.

Next I fused very fine strips of thermoplastic to each leaf using heat and the edge of my art knife, to create leaf veins and give further shape to each piece.

Once cooled they became solid.

Using heat once more, I then fused each leaf to another until I created the desired design.

I then applied glass paint to each leaf creating a further fusion of rich glossy colour.

For the final stage I fused the design to the silver headband.

I did this by securing thin strips of thermoplastic to the base of the headpiece and then molding it further over 2 parts of the band to create a seal.
