Category: Traditional
Description
The noun for Fusion is defined as
“The process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity.”
Clypeasteroida is the scientific name for a Sand Dollar. I have taken sections of the patterns found on sand dollars and joined them together to form one single headpiece that floats on the head through the use of a handmade wire frame. This frame is an integral part of the overall design.
Materials
- Wool felt reclaimed from a damaged 19402 hat was used as the base for both sections.
- Leather was reclaimed from an 1980 s Argentinian leather skirt.
- Veiling is original 1950s veiling.
- Wire framework made to connect the two sections was constructed from fencing wire that was wrapped in waxed cotton cord.
- Lining is constructed from the reclaimed lining of the leather skirt.
- Edge of lining is finished off with braid.
Techniques
- Paper patterns for each section and the wire framework were made on dome block.
- Wool felt was blocked on dome block and then patterns were used to cut out the shapes.
- Edges were wired and leather was stretched over the sections.
- Fencing wire was bent in to shape with pliers and then hand wrapped in cord.
- Veiling was draped over each section to determine position before the wire framework was attached.
- Lining was blocked before being cut into shape.
- After lining was in position edge was finished with braid.
- The hat is positioned on the head with a handmade Alice Band.
