The Copper Topper

Description

The Copper Topper is a traditional shaped Top hat with a modern twist by using Copper making a cage with a small top hat suspended inside so fusing old and new together.

Materials

  • Copper wire
  • Copper strip
  • Solder
  • Petersham ribbon
  • Wool Felt

Techniques

  • The Copper wire was shaped buy hand using a wooden hat block. The Copper strips were shaped by hand using a vice and pliers. The wire was then soldered onto the strips using a small blow torch and was shaped by eye using one of my top hats as a guide.
    The whole hat was polished by hand.
  • The small felt Top hat suspended inside was made using felt blocked and steamed over a small brass top hat ashtray then stiffened and petersham ribbon sewn on.
  • The whole thing was mad by hand but in a modern way.
