2018 HATalk Competition Entry

Tomoko Tahara

Tomoko Tahara – Canada

Warm ice

Category: Traditional

Description

I like making hats with twisted, unusual ideas. This hat is inspired by ice cubes.I was wondering if I made ice cubes with wool – totally opposite ideas together into one, making ice cold cubes with warm cozy wool.

For working process – I take belief schetch and try making and finding the balance of the design. This one went sci-fi fantasy – like ice queen’s head dress. Cute, uplifting, as well as remaining a little bit of darkness which my hats have.

As this contest theme is Fusion – this hat wouldn’t be extremely fusion technically since the technique is only needle felting and sewing, but imaginary would be great fusion.

Materials

  • Wool
  • Silk satin

Techniques

  • Needle felting
  • sewing
  • I made the felt ice cubes one by one, and hand sewed together with looking at the perfect balance.
