Eun Young Lee
Eun Young Lee – South Korea
Bloom
Description
In ancient Asian philosophy equilibrium represents the highest state-of-mind. It is a balance between heart and soul that leads to true self-consciousness and control. The equilibrium enables you to control your mind, conquer sadness and anger, and bring calmness and peacefulness in your heart. This will lead to enlightenment. This headpiece contains three cylinder shapes, which symbolize the different parts of the heart, filled with blooming flowers. They are symmetrically placed, which shows the harmony of body and soul. The piece expresses equilibrium, a beautiful, shiny and enlightened state-of-mind.
Materials
- Hanji, traditional Korean paper
- Lacquer (water proof) from the anacardiaceae plant
- Wire
- Mesh fabric
- beads
- feathers
Techniques
- Traditional Korean paper craft Jiseung; after having cut and humidified (water) the paper strips of Hanji (Korean traditional paper), I have rolled up the strips to make long cords, which can be woven around a shape (in this case a cylinder tube). I have used the clear lacquer from the anacardiaceae plant to make the paper waterproof. I have used this Jiseung craft to turn natural materials into a head piece.
- Mesh fabric flower craft; bending the wire in the desired shape, covering each leaf with mesh fabric and binding them together to create a flower-shaped object.
