2019 HATalk Competition Entry

Unity

Description

I was excited to find a patterned fabric that was similar to the yin and yang symbol, but not too literal and another fabric with an arrow like pattern. When I think of equilibrium, I think of balance. The pattern on my fascinator is in balance, the arrows all point in a continuous pattern and the outer yin and yang sequined patterns meet at the top in uniform. The fascinator itself will balance on the head of the person wearing it.

Materials

  • Buckram
  • Sequined fabric
  • Lamé
  • Cardboard
  • Elastic
  • Hot glue
  • Thread
  • Felt

Techniques

  • Built the base out of buckram using a hat block.
  • Covered the buckram base with the black and gold lamé using both sewing and hot glue to secure in place.
  • Cut out two circular discs in cardboard.
  • Covered those with the yin and yang patterned sequined fabric on one side and the other with the arrow patterned lamé. Lined up the two circles so the arrow pattern on the lamé matched up with the direction of the sequined fabric.
  • Attached the two circles to the base using hot glue. If you look inside the fascinator you will notice the arrows make a continuous circle. All the patterns are in balance, unity and equilibrium.
  • The fascinator secures to the head with an elastic band.
