Tourmente
Description
My headpiece TOURMENTE (french for Tempest) takes its inspiration from the force that is created where wind meets water.
The flowing pieces of crin and straw twirls over and around the hat’s center piece with the lightness of air in wave like shapes of water. Here these two equally strong natural elements both collide and combine into equilibrium.
Materials
- Wire
- Crin
- Navy blue strawbraid
- Threads
Techniques
- The base headband is made of wire, bent to shape by hand and covered with two shades of brown thread to match the wearers hair colour.
- The strawbraid was positioned on three parts of crin in an S pattern to create a twirling effect and sewn into place by machine. The strawbraid on the crin was then wired and stitched by hand to be able to bend the design into shape.
- To create the flowing movement of this headpiece the crin was somewhat twisted over the wire then stitched together. The three finished pieces of crin and strawbraid were sewn on to the headband by hand and bent into different shapes around the ball in center.
- The ball in center is made by narrow black crin and navy blue strawbraid shaped and sewn by hand.
