Mercedes Casado – United Kingdom

From Harare to Bilbao

Description

This fascinator reminds me of some great moment and good memories from my days back in Zimbabwe, and those days were the days of relaxing and hot weather, smiles and good vibes. Walking by the Flea Market in Harare I remember seeing this piece of fabric, and somehow I fall deeply in love with it. Therefore, one day I decided that I should use it in one of my piece of work. So, I wanted to create a design where the fabric and the shape could share the attention. I felt it should have curves to follow the pattern and the curves of the Guggenheim museum from my hometown (Bilbao) came to my mind straight away, the museum brought a cultural revolution to my town. The fact of the fusion with the traditional Zimbabwean fabric it was a perfect equilibrium of modernity and tradition. Harare and Bilbao, totally different but I love them both.
