Balancing twist

Description

The navy blue base of the hat is holding a delicate teal twist, which seems to be balancing graciously, apparently only held together by a button. With the hat being worn at an angle this ‘equilibrium’ seems even more precarious, like a fleeting moment – only to stay in place, and never break.

Materials

• Peachbloom felt in navy blue and teal
• Vintage button
• Elastic
• Hair comb

Techniques

• Stiffening the felt
• Blocking the felt on a teardrop block (for the base)
• Spontaneously twisting the contrasting piece of material as wave folding on itself
• Hand sewing the petersham, button detail and the twist onto the base
