Description

My piece is created using mixed textures. My understanding of equilibrium is that it is a combination of things which join together and co exsist to create one outcome. My piece does just that. It is a mixture of different materials joined together to create something beautiful. I wanted it to take on a life of its own and become a thing of beauty created out of a mix match of materials.

The ombré effect on the sinamay draws the eye up towards the soft feather feature and helps to soften the harshness of the stark white sinamay. I wanted to create something that could be admired from all angles. A sculpture which would spark an interest and create a talking point. For me that’s what equilibrium is all about.

Materials

• Straw capeline
• Sinamay
• Feathers
• Spray paint
• Block
• Iron
• Stiffner
• Scissors
• Blocking pins
• Needle & thread

Techniques

• I blocked the straw to create the base
• I then cut and steamed my sinamay into shape.
• I fixed my sinamay into place and sewed it all together.
• I then sewed my feathers into place and sprayed the sinamay to create an ombré effect.
