Unbroken Chain

Description

Art and creativity are timeless, both through public enjoyment and through the passing down of the skills. Through apprenticeships and experimentation, art is constantly evolving with each generation. My goal as an artist is to take a technique or materials and make it my own, to find a way to work with it or present it in a way that is completely original. I want my hats to be unique, sculptural works of art that make the wearer stand out. By being true to myself and my point of view I create something timeless.

Materials

  • Crinoline
  • Headband
  • Comb
  • Ribbon for headband

Techniques

  • I hand dyed each piece of crinoline, so that each piece has its own unique gradient coloring
  • The crinoline was pressed flat then hand pleated individually
  • Once pleated, the ends are gathered and sealed
  • The pieces were then looped together for a chain effect and sewn closed into circular shapes
  • By using the natural properties of the crinoline. the piece is able to be held up only by the crinoline itself. There are no wires or supports, so the piece is very lightweight and easy to wear
