2020 HATalk Competition Entry

Isabella Cobby

Isabella Cobby – United Kingdom

Description

I wanted to create a simple sculptural ‘timeless’ design that spans the decades and could easily of been made and worn in the 1940’s or the modern day. The hat is created from wool felt, a material available in both eras and shaped over a wartime darning mushroom or today’s modern button block. The headpiece is also very elegant and ‘timeless’ as it could be worn to a daytime or evening event.

Materials

  • Wool Felt
  • Petersham Ribbon
  • Felt Stiffener
  • Millinery Wire
  • Millinery Elastic

Techniques

  • Blocking and stiffening of felt over button block to create shape.
  • Wiring and hand stitching Petersham ribbon inside the felt shape to help maintain structure.
  • Free form sculpting of wool felt for hat trim detail.
  • Addition of millinery elastic to keep the headpiece in position.
