When I thought of timeless, the first thing that sprang to mind was ‘classic’ and ‘timeless fashion’ and of course the famous Coco Channel, who first started her fashion career in millinery.

The most iconic and timeless fashion piece has to be the ‘little black dress’, so I wanted to make a little black hat that would have looked great in any Coco Channel hat shop!

In line with the timeless theme, I wanted to represent my British roots by drawing inspiration from the classic top hat and mix it up with my adopted homeland of France by adding a little cloche twist.

My hat passion started with flat pattern designs and over time has evolved to include many other millinery techniques, so I wanted to incorporate flat pattern hat making techniques into my hat as the starting point to the ‘timeline’ of my hat.

The hat brim, band and bow are all decorated with free hand machine embroidery which represent the never ending and intertwining lines of time on my millinery journey.

As milliners, we evolve, we learn, we share and as a community we keep millinery timeless.

Materials

• Pure wool fabric
• Cotton fabric (lining)
• Buckram
• Millinery wire
• Bias binding
• Sewing thread
• Petersham ribbon

Techniques

• Flat pattern, cut and sew technique
• Wired brim and crown
• Buckram crown and separate brim base, steamed and molded into shape
• Bias binding edges
• Free hand machine embroidery using 3 different colors of thread
• Fully lined with a floral cotton fabric
• Hand stitching
