- Upcycled Denim Hat Project by Jane Fryers
Description
"Penelope" was inspired by the upcycled denim hat creation of Jane Fryers. I too have always appreciated upcycling and immediately wanted to create a piece with a vintage kimono. I love the contrasting fabrics used in the different facings. I chose a size small young adult silk jacket.
The shape was taken from a vintage 1950's bonnet style block which was made into a buckram foundation. Inspired by the idea of contrast, the main jacket of the kimono is on the top of the bonnet while the lining is on the underbrim. Also, contrast is seen in the masculinity of the straw and the feminity of the veiling.
For the trims I wanted to use as much vintage and/or upcycled materials as possible. The vintage silk veiling is a scrap, and the
Turkey/Goose feather flowers are a composition of new, old, one-offs and some feathers taken from other flowers.
