HATalk Archive Inspiration

Description

I started looking for inspiration in the HATalk archive and I was eager to find something from which to flow ideas. I saw Rafa Peinador's hat on the cover of issue 165 and until I read what it was about, the thought of the planets took me and from here came my inspiration for Saturn, space and infinity. The thought of infinity floods the mind with ideas ... infinite ... instant. The pale yellow hue of the planet Saturn immediately made me think of the silk material we already have in my workshop. I immediately knew that I wanted to use something spectacular for the ring and from the silk material to create an oversized crown through which to see the actual crown of the hat, which I really wanted to line and finish with a sweatband made entirely, including edge, made of very fine high quality genuine leather embroidered hand sewing to great art, as I usually finish my hats. In order to be able to see through the oversized crown, I knew that I would extract threads from the silk material. The inspiration for the cut came later during the making of the crown. And for the brim, the inspiration came on the spot from the shape of Rafa Peinador's hat. The idea of extracting threads from the silk material came along with the idea of superimposing it in several layers, and to use even a layer of sinamay, which I painted in a pale yellow shade. And ready the idea of the hat ... unique and unrepeatable, like all of us ... hat-planet-ring inspired by jellyfish ... hat. Everything is possible!

Hat Making Materials

  • Silk in two pale colors, yellow and pink
  • Sinamay and yellow and brown paint
  • The deluxe precious taffeta for the lining and cotton material with silk for the lining cord
  • For sweatband: very fine high quality genuine leather, equaled to 0.4mm including closing edge, ivory color; a piece of genuine leather for the embossed monogram, pearly brown color; organza ribbon for bow from the label; 0.9mm nylon thread and glossy sewing thread
  • Plexiglass (laser cut)
  • 0.9mm wide sprung millinery wire
  • 20mm long brass metal wire
  • Invisible nylon sewing thread
  • Silicone glue

Hat Making Techniques

  • I did the blocking process either by sewing and tensioning the materials behind the block (brim / small crown) or by block ties (large crown) and then stiffened
  • In turn from each of the 3 layers of silk (brim / large crown) I extracted approximately 2200 threads
  • The base of the brim is made of sinamay that I painted
  • I glued some of the extracted silk threads between the two crowns
  • I made the cord from the lining manually
  • I sewed the edge of the sweatband by hand, making an embroidery in genuine leather
