HATalk Issue 176: BES-BEN HATS: A Legacy of Delight – Behind the scenes with author Elizabeth Jachimowicz.
Description
The article inspired me "Freedom" with which to move. Freedom to experiment with designs and materials. It prompted me to work with cheerful and colorful shapes, to get a fun and original hat.
Practicing with different materials, playing with all of them to enjoy both the realization of the hat and the final result.
Hat Making Materials
- Cocktail hat block
- Pins
- Buckram
- Black goat leather
- Polyester fabric lining
- Black embroidered ribbon
- Black thread
- 0’3ømm copper wire in different colors
- Clamping structure for 1ømm copper wire ornaments
Hat Making Techniques
- For the Hat – Blocking in black goat leather, on buckram base. Inside is finished with a black polyester fabric lining. The inner edges are finished with black embroidered ribbon. The hat incorporates a rubber for support.
- For the Ornaments – They are crocheted one by one, with 0’3ømm copper wire, in different colors. Placed and sewn together, on a structure previously created and molded in 1ømm copper wire. The flowers and balls are placed as in a light and invisible suspension, which gives them the appearance of being shaken and piled up by the wind.
