HATalk Competition Entry 2022

Description
My happy place is my Bed!
It provides comfort and security and for me symbolises feeling “home.” I have been ill for a lot of my life, spending months at a time in hospital and the one place I crave is being back in my own bed!
When I am laying in bed at night, I listen to the silence and I feel grateful for being able to shield myself off from the rest of the world, feeling sheltered and covered by sheets and blankets.
For this piece I toyed with doing something more literal (how will they know it’s supposed to be a bed?) but In the end I decided to go with something more conceptual and concentrate on creating layers of textures to give the feeling of a bed. I chose to work in monotone to highlight these textures. I wanted to give the impression of feathers and crumpled sheets.
From the wearer’s perspective, I wanted their vision to be slightly obscured by the veiling and for them to feel slightly covered and protected.
For the photoshoot, I wanted to show the calmness of the hat opposing the chaotic surroundings.
