HATalk Competition Entry 2022
Anne Livingston
Description
The lakeshore is my HAPPY PLACE. I walk there often year round, but summer is the liveliest time. There is a marina and a park with a boardwalk. Terns and gulls soaring and diving. The horizon is shifting blue where lake meets sky.
The boater shape was the natural choice for a waterside inspiration, and the first use of a vintage block set I’ve had for years. The cutout in the brim and the side panel beneath suggest the boardwalk over the water’s edge. Translucent, iridescent organza in several shades of blue was the ideal fabric to interpret ripples, waves and sky and the shifting peripheries between them. The birds (in two layers of bonded silk) are creatures of air and water and add life and exuberance to the scene.
Techniques:
- Dyed the sinamay and wire
- Blocked the crown and brim separately
- Cut out crown space in brim then sewed brim to crown
- Wired brim edge, hand sewed turned edge under
- Added side panel, finished with double bias fold sinamay
