HATalk Competition Entry 2022
Faith Butler
Description
My ‘Happy Place’ is the North Devon coast where I live. I was torn between the glorious green countryside and the rugged coast with its spectacular rock formations and sandy surfing beaches. The coast won as I love watching the sea, especially in rough weather. The colours of the sea are constantly changing, I tried to reflect this in my hat by using different shades of blue and green. The sandy beaches are represented by the blocked base, each of the three layers of sinamay being a slightly different colour as the sand is also made up of many different shades if you look closely. The free form shapes making up the wave are wired to give the shape of the surf and finished off with faux feathers, made from frayed sinamay. they give the fragmented, broken up look I wanted.
