HATalk Competition Entry 2022
Kayleigh Elizabeth Balzer
Description
Thinking of my happy place there is definitely music playing. Having received so many records I was thrilled with the idea of repurposing them. With no experience in hat making but lots of experience in multiple art mediums, the idea was born: Vinyl Record Cowboy Hat. Made on my fire escape with a heat gun, heat safe gloves, lots of time, effort & new skills to learn I have created it. I used patterns from cardboard cowboy hats for the base of my brim. Further online research led me to the varying shapes of cowboy hats, from what I learned mine is styled between a teardrop, diamond or rawlins cowboy hat. I completed the hat with a crushed velvet lining, black sweatband. Of course a gold & red chain for compliment while adding ease of use because, yes! While on the heavier side, this hat has and will continue to be worn & loved by all who see it out in the city of Pittsburgh, PA, USA. The record titles themselves do not have personal meaning, Mac Miller is a musical artist I look up to for many reasons, his music played all throughout the process of making this, along with but not limited to, Mary J Blige, & A Tribe Called Quest. Music is one medium I feel everyone can find their happy place in, no matter what genre they choose to immerse themselves in.
