Description
I am mostly housebound, sometimes bedbound, for long periods due to chronic illness. And so there’s not much I can physically do at these times, except look out the window at the same view every day. As a result, I have come to really enjoy and appreciate watching the clouds as they move and change across the sky, so much so that I have become a member of the Cloud Appreciation Society. One of the few things I look forward to the most is the frequent Cloud-A-Day live streams on Facebook, and interacting with fellow cloud lovers online. My favourite times of the day to watch clouds are around sunrise and sunset, bringing out the fantastic colours reflected in them – pinks, golds, reds, yellows and purples. This is my happy place. It is relaxing, spiritually warming, inspiring and entertaining. Another happy place of mine was when I was at college, studying Art and Design, which I had to give up due to my chronic illness after two years. I loved designing and creating things using geometric and organic shapes in 3D, so my headpiece is also a nod back to all those works created back then. I wanted to make something contemporary, almost sculptural that reflected my favourite pastime. I had a vague idea in my head and began shaping and playing with scrap pieced of sinamay bias. And after a few practice attempts and practical evaluations, I made my Head in the Clouds headpiece choosing a colour that can be found in clouds at my favourite times to watch them. I added the pearl beads for added contrast and design interest, and a basic, slimline attachment of elastic which I felt was fitting to the minimalist style.
