Description
My happy place is the view from my bedroom in my grandparent’s house in Galloway. It is a large tree that stands directly in front of a hill, so I have taken the design from the happy place in quite a literal way. I love this view because I see it on every holiday, and it never changes. It is also our designated picnic location.
The hill behind the tree is ploughed every year, which leaves a stripy pattern. This is why I’ve wrapped the hat with long strips of fabric, to make undulating lines like on the hill. My favorite time of year in Galloway is Spring, so I decorated it with things that I associate with spring and the countryside. These include tassels, teapots, birds and gold ornaments.
I wanted to use as many colours and patterns in the design as possible, because the house that looks onto the tree is stuffed full of textiles from around the world (my grandmother’s field of expertise).
I made 7 larger flowers using PETG and floral fabrics, and attached them to the tree branches so that they face upwards, like spring-flowers do. I have tried to show the flowers at different stages of openness, to make them naturalistic.
Techniques:
- Blocked and wired buckram, covered it in blue fabric
- Built a tree structure out of millinery wire (held together with cotton thread)
- Wrapped strips of cotton (cut on the bias) around the wire branches
- Made yards of fabric piping by machine sewing cotton strips (cut on the bias)
- Ironed cotton fabric onto PETG (using bondaweb) and molded it into flowers using a heat gun
Materials:
- Cotton fabric
- Cotton thread
- Millinery wire
- Buckram
- PETG plastic sheets
- Cotton string tassels
- Faux leather tassels
- Assorted beads / charms
