HATalk Competition Entry 2022

Description
My happy place is the amazing beach “Espet” near my hometown – I go there every week and find the ever-changing water and crashing waves both meditative and energizing. It’s an oasis – especially in the creative process of creating my hats – no matter what time of the year.
I wanted to create a large boater like hat to visualize the sea and how the waves crash into the sand dunes on the beach. I wanted the brim to be large and flat, like the sea horizon, so I made a bias brim in the blue-green color the sea water has on sunny days. I used Sinamay to give it a transparent, water-like look. The crown was dyed into the same color as the sand and shaped to resemble a sand dune.
To create a sculptural shape of rolling waves I used hand dyed and hand pleated organdie as a trimming both over and under the brim. The hat is also adorned with glittering squares of gold veiling to resemble sun light on the water surface.
Techniques:
- I hand dyed Sinamay fabric – ocean turquoise for the brim and sand color for the crown.
- I reshaped a hatblock to make it island/sand dune like to block the crown.
- I shaped wire into a large oval shape, dyed it turquoise. I covered it with ocean turquoise sinamay to create a bias brim.
- The brim and crown was sewn together and a sinamay ribbon attached around the crown.
- I hand dyed organdie into ombre sea colors, pleated it by hand and created sculptural waves rolling over the brim.
- I added gold veiling for a glittering effect.
