HATalk Competition Entry 2022
Patricia Welsh
Description
Springtime… an orchard… a truly happy place with birds singing and wild flowers growing under foot.
The tree’s are dripping with delightfully fragranced pink cherry and apple blossom, a cuckoo is calling accross the valley and a lady sits on a swing under an apple tree!
A hat in the romantic style of a bygone era with a Gibson Girl nod. Feather light and delicate with pretty angles and soft edges.
Just like you’re stepping out of a romantic novel! But like any modern country girl… wearing wellington boots of course.
Techniques:
- A saucer shape was blocked using a shallow wooden bowl with three layers of white sinamay. It was wired around the edge and covered with petersham. It was then steamed and pressed onto a wooden head block to form a small dent
- The crown was blocked in sinamay then stiffened and attached to the saucer with needle and thread
- The Cherry Blossoms were sewn in place with small beads and pale pink tulle added
- A small round was blocked and headband attached covered by a felt round with ribbon + sequins and sewn to hat
