Description

My Happy Place is sculpting. I was determined to study Fashion Design and I did but sadly I did not love it. I went in a different direction, Sculpture.

Sculpting to me means using your bare hands to manipulate a medium into something spectacular. It doesn’t always work out but the process is a learning curve and the ideas while creating lend themselves to future creations.

Another Happy Place is my garden during the summer when all the flowers are blooming. There is one spot where the most beautiful Red Roses Bloom every summer, they look so classic and really stand out.

I combined these two elements to create my design. I deconstructed the Rose. It is made of many different layers and I wanted to reassemble a Rose in a different manner. The colour appears red but when inspected the petals were various shades of red and I wanted to echo this in my fabric.

The fabrics used in the design are all handmade in-house by myself. It is sustainable as all cut offs are reworked back into the design leaving no waste.

I wanted a statement piece. I had an idea to sculpt a base into a half moon and layer it with deconstructed Rose petals. There are 189 individual petals in total handsewn onto the design.

I made 3 different sized petals, each one was cut out and folded in half. They were handsewn into place beginning with the smallest petals first and then going up in size throughout the design. I overlapped each slightly side by side and on top of each other throughout the design.

I added two full Roses to the underneath, they are subtle enough to not over power the piece but they also really tie the piece together and draw the eye.

Materials:

  • My handmade fabric, created using various fibres. Once a sheet of the fabric is created it cannot be replicated making each piece bespoke. All the cut off were reworked to make the base of the design leaving no wasted behind.
  • The fabric was sculpted into the halfmoon shape using Hat Wire, it was also used to create the 189 individual Rose petals which were then handsewn onto the half-moon shape
  • The design is secure to the head with a Large Acrylic Comb finished with red ribbon and a black elastic
  • Wooden label
  • Red gems

Techniques:

  • I began by making the fabrics, drawing individual petals and cutting them out.
  • I created the half-moon shape using my fabric and adding hat wire to secure the shape
  • I hand sewed all the petals into place, smallest to largest
  • I created 2 Individual Roses using the petals and layered them to create the Roses and hand sewed them into place. I decorated them with red gems to draw the eye
  • I covered a large comb in red ribbon, added elastic and hand sewed the to the base
  • I added a label to finish
