Description

“Sedimentary” is a piece inspired by sedimentary rocks and geologic strata. The silhouette, with tall fedora crown and highly asymmetrical brim, was chosen to call to mind geologic formations and faults. It features numerous multicolored joined strips of wool felt inserted into the blocked felt body of highly textured wool/fur blend. The lines and colors represent the layers in sandstone formations, particularly in my region. Every felt piece has been joined entirely by hand stitching. The edge of the brim has been left unbound to evoke a sense of erosion.

The felt strips are also significant in that they are scraps, offcuts, and roundings saved from previous hats I have made across years. Using them in this way is not only a sustainable choice, but also represents a metaphorical stratigraphy of my career so far.

It is finished with a full silk lining, a leather sweatband, and western styled vintage ply cord ribbon in a copper color.

Materials:

Wool/fur blend felt body
Wool felt scraps
Silk taffeta
Leather sweatband
Ribbon

Techniques:

Felt blocking (crown)
Hand stitching (particularly significant in extensive joining of felt)
Freeform manipulation (brim)
