HATalk Competition Entry 2023
Hayley May
Description
Inspired by the mycelium of the fungi world, a thread like network woven under the earth that connects and extends across the forest floor pushing fruiting bodies towards the light. Using nourishment from the Earth element theme, golden stems extended out of a twisted vine producing sun seeking flowers.
I wanted to create flowers to represent this network using small threads I have been saving up instead of going in the bin. I played around with the wash-away fabric to form a net like pattern to reflect the idea of mycelium, shaping while wet. As a keen fungi macro photographer I often notice how flower like the tiny caps can be and wanted to show this idea in my headpiece.
It was important to reuse and recycle as much as possible, challenging myself to make flowers from discarded threads.
