Description

Changing Waters – Imitating Streams, Oceans, Lakes, still waters and fast flowing waters such as Waterfalls. I decided for this project as based on Earth to attempt to recycle and upcycle as much as possible. The fabric covered hat base is from one of my previous fashion projects in 2019. I started by carefully removing the trimmings. Originally the hat was blocked in buckram, tubed, covered in fabric to smooth surface and covered in final digitally printed fabric design by a friend. Once I had the base back to a new starting point, I applied an offcut silver beaded trim to the hat base representing glistening streams, removing any unwanted beads within the trim as they did not have the right feel for this hat. Using scrap fabrics, I gathered/ruched fabrics and applied to segments of the hat. Imitating the ocean and a few cotton organdie waves. Using a small amount of glue I attach a few semi-precious stones that did not have holes. I then stitched on drilled chipped crystals stones from old bracelets. Finally using left over art clay I made pebbles to keep the weight low around the streams. These pebbles were painted brown, sand, black, grey and orange tones for that organic feel. I used acrylic paints and once the pebbles dried, I then sewed them onto the hat. Using left over scrap fabrics in tones of blue to imitate motions of water – Tulle in white and blue to represent spraying misty water. Left over stiffened and dyed fabric for the last trim on top on the hat. Lastly using textured transparent fabric to create a waterfall veil with tulle base. Intentionally leaving the salvage on the veil as attempting not to waste fabric where possible.
