Name of Hat
Earthwire

Description

I considered the brief of ‘Earth’ in the context of a 3 pin electrical plug, which contains 3 wires: Live; Neutral and Earth. The earth wire is identifiable by its striking yellow and green casing. The main function of the earth wire is to prevent injury by electric shock and damage to electrical appliances, by giving excess electrical charges a safe place to go. I was struck by the significance of the quest for sustainable energy in order for planet Earth to remain a safe place. Most of us will have a little white plug in our hands at some point every day. Plugging in our phones to charge is often the first and last thing we do each day. That little white plug holds so much power – we all rely on electrical power to live our daily lives in the modern world, but we have the power to preserve the safety of the planet. I wanted my hat to be a square white base to represent the electrical plug, with a striped yellow and green trim to represent the Earth wire. The hat sits on the back of the head as a perching pillbox style.

Materials:

Fosshape 600 for base
Cotton covered millinery wire to edge base and also trim
Thread for sewing
White boucle tweed wool fabric
Petersham ribbon
2 x combs to secure
Sinamay for trim
Fabric marker to colour wire on edge of trim
Goose nagoire feathers
Satin fabric for lining.

Techniques:

Base blocked using Fosshape over a square wooden bowl. Wired edge.
Base covered in fabric. Hand-stitched to secure. Applied Petersham.
Trim made by blocking 3 layers of sinamay over a flat brim block then cutting an organic shape. Wired edge. Steamed and sculpted into shape, bending the wire. Edge bound with a bias sinamay strip.
I covered the sinamay shape with goose nagoire feathers, each cut to a uniform teardrop shape. Fixed into place with glue and then stitched the trim onto the base.
Finished with 2 x combs to secure, and a hand-gathered satin lining.
