Name of Hat
Earth: Sustainer of Life

Description

For me EARTH represents life and nourishment. Our planet is unique in the solar system as it is the only one known to support life. With my love of astronomy and a fascination of NASA photographs of Earth from space my objective was to design a hat that represented our planets unique role as a sustainer of life.

Set amidst the black background of space my blue planet sits at the centre of the hat. A Tree of Life rises from the planet to represent harmony and balance and a connection between earth and heaven. The roots of the tree go round the Earth showing that this is where life comes from. The branches reach up and over the Earth symbolising their role as the guardian of our ecosystem providing oxygen for life on earth. The tree is made in brown, green and yellow as these colours represent the Earth symbol. On the underside of the hat sits a heart representing the life-giving core of Earth.

The dark sky of space has five constellations. Orion – as it is one of the most iconic constellations and the first one I could identify; The Plough – because of it’s significance in helping humans navigate and explore; Cygnus – because I love swans; Cassiopeia – because the story behind Queen Cassiopeia and her punishment by Poseidon is one my son loved hearing about when we visited planetariums when he was a child; and Leo – my husbands star sign. It was important to have some representation of my family in my design as they sustain me in all I do.
