Description
Symbolism: round, runes, belief, religion, ethnic codes.
Earth. 5th Element. The symbol of the creation of all living beings. Mother Earth. The beginning.
Each culture has its beliefs and primitive understanding of the beginning. In Slavic tradition – the Earth element represents fertility, nature, female beginning, connection to the land, and birth. In Ukraine, “Earth/land” was respected, protected, and treasured. It is often associated with agriculture, the harvest, and the importance of the Ukrainian countryside. “Earth/land” plays a vital part in society, having a deep meaning in its culture and traditions. At first, in a way of written/drawn symbols and runes; later its symbolism was reflected in traditional embroidery.
Ukrainian embroidery often features motifs and patterns inspired by the earth element. These designs can include depictions of plants, crops, and natural landscapes, symbolizing the connection between Ukrainian culture and the land, representing fertility, prosperity, and the beauty of the earth. These intricate designs not only serve decorative purposes but also convey a strong cultural and spiritual connection to the Ukrainian homeland and its rich agricultural heritage.
Digging a bit deeper, the conversion of paganism in later modern religion …the tradition of respecting “Mother Earth”, and “The beginning of everything” represents Christian beliefs in Saint Mary the Mother.
The headpiece presented looks at the “Earth element” from the symbolic angle; and projects the beliefs in Earth as a “beginning” and as a “saint”. It reflects the meaning of Earth not only in colour, shape, and motives but rediscovers its deeper meaning from the prism of Ukrainian culture.
The front of the design depicts the ethnic Ukrainian embroidery symbols of “Mother Earth” which you can find in traditional clothing. In addition, the halo shape of the headpiece is an intake and reflection on religious icons and the way saints were depicted.
