Description

This hat is inspired by the amazing shapes and colours of swirling ocean waves and how water is so important in sustaining life on our planet.

The main structure of the hat is a wave shape base and I have used the qualities of silk abaca, with its shine and curves to create swirling shapes of waves and ocean swell. Chiffon adds another dimension, creating a further sense of sea spray and the movement of billowing water.

Using a range of colours from deepest blue-black through to pale blue and cream, I wanted to represent some of the many colours of the seas and the varying depths of the oceans from the sea shore to the deepest depths of the abyss.

At the back of the hat is an octopus swimming in the depths of the deep blue water, representing the diversity of life within our oceans.

Techniques:

  • Pattern drafting
  • Free form blocking
  • Stiffening base material
  • Attaching wire to edging
  • Hand and machine sewing
  • Silk abaca steaming and manipulation
  • Creating a headband with wire and ribbon
  • Attaching comb
  • Needle-felting
