Ripples and Waves

Description

I live on the coast and the inspiration is the changing moods of the sea. The brim is shaped like a water drop and the covering on the base is two layers of fabric to create the effect of water ripple. The decorative addition is to represent the waves; the big loop being large breakers or surf waves, smaller waves underneath and running down to the waves gently flowing onto the shore. The decorations at the end of the waves represent the sea foam and the sun glinted on the water creating rainbow colours.

Techniques:

  • Blocked sinamay base – separate crown and brim
  • Covering base with 2 layers of fabric shaped to suggest ripples
  • Wiring brim and all around the decorative wave
  • Hand sewing throughout
  • Hand cut fabric bias and fitting to brim
  • Lining with silk, petersham and elastic
  • Working the bought fringing to create the effect of sea foam
  • Covering the wave shaped sinamay with fabric

Materials:

Sand coloured and blue with lurex sinamay
Blue slightly pleated polyester fabric
Blue/green/gold organza
Petersham
Silk lining
Pre-made fringe
Crin
Fine millinery wire.
