Description
I was inspired by the woodcut “The Great Wave” by Hokusai to create this headpiece, a work that represents the power of nature looming over fragile humanity; the strength of the wave and the allure of the sea, that I love so much and that, unfortunately, in these time is hard to imagine pure, without the plastic that humans use extensively and then pour into the waters of our planet. This is why, to represent the sea foam, I used the real plastic bottles that inhabit our seas, shattered into a thousand pieces fused by heat, the same heat that overheats our planet. The shape of the wave is also the base profiles of the headpiece. I started with white fur felt, imagining the transparency of water, but then decided to cover it with a light leather printed in both glossy and matte, evoking the sandy bottom of a dreamlike sea. The single pieces of plastic recall water droplets, while when assembled in various shades, they form the foam of the wavem crashing on the shore, just like the tubular crin water-green; this is a vintage material for hat making in line with the reuse ethics that drives my work.
Techniques:
- I shaped the felt on a wooden form with steam
- I drew a wave shape on the felt
- I cut and hand-stitched the wire along the edges
- I stiffened the felt with brush
- I covered the base with light printed leather
- I cut a lot of white and light blue plastic bottles into small pieces and heated them over a flame to make them more irregular
- I hand-stitched the plastic pieces with transparent nylon thread, and some I glued with hot glue
- I shaped the lining fabric on the wooden form, then cut it following the base shape placed on top
- I hand-stitched the lining and finished the edges with white trim
- I manually created the wave shape with wire
- I covered the wave structure by hand-stitching gradient green-blue silk chiffon
- I covered the wire with Lycra ribbon
- I stitched the plastic pieces on the silk with nylon thread, focusing more on the upper part to create the foam of the wave.I shaped the tubular crin on the base and glued some plastic pieces on it.
