HATalk Competition Entry 2024
Karla Coreil
Description
This fascinator features swirls of bright blue waves with frothy silver “foam,” just like a sunny day at the beach.
I have long been obsessed with water, and this abaca technique I discovered mimics the rolling seas. I envision fish darting about just below the surface of the water, striving to avoid the shadowy net from the nearby fishing boats.
The colors of the blue abaca and silver ribbon mimic crystal blue seas with sunlight glinting off the surface, while the black open weave mat and sinamay base represent the shadowy fishing nets lurking nearby.
This competition theme is perfect as I’m off to the seashore myself after I submit this competition entry!
Techniques:
- I first steamed and sculpted the open weave base and attached it to a wired black sinamay base.
- I created “froth” by weaving silver ribbon through the open weave sculpture, tacking the ends.
- Next I created “waves” by pressing silk abaca and sculpting part of it into a swoopy bow then slicing the other end with scissors.
- I sewed the abaca to the sinamay base and tacked it to the open weave.
- Next, I curled the sliced ends of the abaca with a hot oversized curling iron to create rolling “waves.”
- Finally, I attached a felt and sinamay headband sleeve.
Materials:
Silk abaca in blue
Polyester ribbon in silver
Open weave mat in black
Black sinamay (for base)

Satin covered headband
Felt in black (for headband sleeve)
