Name of Hat
My Leaky Faucet

Description

I am often inspired by the mundane in life – for this theme I thought about my leaky faucet. Taking the idea of a drop of water and emphasizing the beauty it can create through ripples and waterfalls. Through the use of traditional millinery techniques mixed with new, innovative methods, I push the boundaries of playfulness in headwear.

I utilized household objects to create a custom block for the base of the hat and went in with beading to artificially create the highlights of glistening water. The individual strands that hang add the movement desired to mimic water cascading over the edge. If little drops of water make the mighty ocean, this is what my leaky faucet can create.

Techniques:

  • Sculpting blocks for droplet and splash
  • Blocking both felt components
  • Wiring brim, inner ripples, and droplet
  • Hand painting on dye for water dimension
  • Hand sewing inner grosgrain
  • Hand beading directly on felts
  • Hand stringing beaded strands

Materials:

Hat materials:
Velour hood
Velour Capeline
Millinery wire
Various sizes and styles of blue glass beads
Fabric dye
Grosgrain

Block materials:
Wood board
Various bowls
Clay
Plaster
Wood sealant
Papier mache
