Name of Hat
As The Ice Melts...

Description

I wanted to create a contemporary hat with couture qualities that would portray the beauty of ice as it forms and disintegrates into droplets of water. Each time water freezes it creates a new landscape that can never be duplicated. The beauty of this hat is that it could never be replicated, making it unique.

The ice effect uses both the matt and shiny sides of the resin to add depth to the design. Large crystals are used discreetly to add subtle sparkle.

I wanted to keep the details subtle yet beautiful, creating a timeless, wearable piece with luxury at the heart of it.

Techniques:

  • Hat base blocked by hand using wooden block
  • Two layers of sinamay on straight grain, one layer on bias
  • Shallow sinamay crown base inserted into hat, wired and hand stitched into hat
  • Water droplets created by drizzling UV resin on invisible thread and cured
  • Ice effect created by UV resin poured onto scrunched up parchment paper, cured and then removed
  • Extra sparkle created by placement of large crystals within ice effect
  • Hand stitched brim reed
  • Hand stitched petersham binding

Materials:

Black sinamay
UV resin
Petersham ribbon
Invisible thread
Large crystals
Satin covered hairband
