HATalk Competition Entry 2024

Description
Rain or shine.
Imagine that you are looking through a looking-glass in the rain and see a water drop with a beautiful sunflower in it, that also glows in the dark.
I began by making a form out of a sculpture block that looked like a big raindrop and painted it with glue.
After the form was dry i layed on a layer of organza and painted it with stiffener to get the watery “see through” texture.
To get it to hold its form I sewed on a milliner wire around the edges and covered it with satin ribbon.
I painted the silk fabric and made the petals and leaves for the sunflower and stem with flower tools, and then I sewed on beads in the center of the sunflower.
I twisted one stem and covered it in flower tape and made another stem that I painted green to cling to the stem and formed little leaves.
The base of the fascinator is made out of paris net that is blocked on a dextrin form, and draped with organza to get the light glistening airy feeling.
For stability on the head I have used a millinery wire and attached 3 different ways to secure the headpiece such as haircombe, hairpin in a hut and elastic see thru band.
The glass water drop is held in place with a knot on each side of the ridgeline and twirls around the stem to symbolise raindrops.
Last but not least I painted the yellow sunflower and leaves with: glowing in the dark paint, to make it magical.
The connection to water in my fascinator is the different kind of waterdrops waterline and wet look.
