Name of Hat
Peter on the sea sea sea

Description

This is based on the song ‘Peter on the sea sea sea.’ It depicts the power of water and the small boats that the fishermen often use to harvest the crops from the sea. How water sustains life in so many ways and yet can take life just as quickly in both large and small bodies of water. The joy that water can bring from bathing and boating and how quickly it can turn to a broiling heaving mass or rushing torrent.

I used the bias brims to create high waves and the swirling nature of a high sea around a small boat. The veiling was to depict the fishing nets and sea spray. The boat is a folded origami style to mimic the small paper boats that could float in the bath tub surrounded by small waves.

Techniques:

  • 2 Handmade bias brims with millinery wire, shaped to represent high waves stitched to base.
  • Hand blocked base, wired, petersham ribbon to finish edge.
  • Origami boat from stiffened hand dyed silk.
  • Veiling gathered and stitched on to represent fishing net and sea spray.

Materials:

Stiffened sinamay
Millinery wire
Silk habotai
Veiling
Petersham ribbon
Millinery elastic
