HATalk Competition Entry 2024

Description
Water is the symbol of our life. It gives us the strength to overcome personal problems, dificulties, suffering. Our life moves in waves that sometimes take us up, sometimes we fall down. We are like the small, calm ripples in streams, but also the dangerous waves of the ocean. We are always looking for the right direction, for the path to inner harmony. “Waves of life” is this harmony.
For this theme I chose a type of button hat, which symbolizes a circle, i.e. harmony. The waves are created by an ancient Czech technique of trimming young girls’ headpieces. This decoration was only used on ceremonial occasions.
For me, the symbol of purity is also the use of white ribbons and silk which I batiked to create different shades of water. The beads symbolize drops of water. The crinoline then brings the whole circle into harmony, balance.
Techniques:
- Preparation of the desired blue shade for batiking
- Batiking textile ribbons, silk for the base and lining
- Shaping a button from buckram
- Covering the button with silk
- Using an ancient and disappeared Czech technique of young ladies hatpieces trimming
- Sewing beads
- Cotton wire sewing
- Shaping the crinoline and sewing it on the button
- Sewing the lining
- Sewing elastic
Materials:
White textile ribbon
Javana colours for batiking
Buckram – 3 layers
Silk for covering the base
