HATalk Competition Entry 2024

Description
I love exploring and experimenting with different materials. I was trying to envisage the way water moves in different circumstances and especially the splashes created when a stone is dropped from a height into a pond.
To recreate the “plop”, I poured resin tinted with blue food colour over some clingfilm. Once the resin had begun to cure, I draped it over a hat block to mould it into the shape and to allow the resin to drip. When dry, it drilled some tiny holes to allow me to sew it onto the hat base.
The halo headband is made from layers of blue and sea green sinamay. I wired the halo outline and reinforced the arch shape with more rings of wire to prevent the shape collapsing from the weight of the decoration.
I added a triple wire headband and covered this with a padded lining.
The splash was hand sewn onto the base.
The humpback whale is made from a wire base covered in papier maché. It was then painted and covered in glitter. The whale was attached to the splash using hot glue.
Techniques:
- Blocking sinamay halo
- Wiring sinamay halo
- Inserting wire headband
- Lining halo
- Mixing resin compound to create shape
- Creating wire frame
- Papier maché modeling
Materials:
Blue and green sinamay
PVA glue stiffener
Millinery Wire
Cotton thread
Craft resin
Food colour
Brass wire
