HATalk Competition Entry 2024

Description
Water – the beginning of all life or so it is said. To me it represents the sea, a vastness covering a huge percentage of our planet that is full of mystery, with only 5% explored. The sea has been special to me since childhood a place of joy and freedom. It is also special to a good friend who is going through a very difficult time right now. This design is dedicated to her.
I wanted an organic design mimicking the fluid movement of water. The shape had to be a wave curving under the face, sweeping around and over the head climaxing with a roll of water. To include mystery I created illusion mermaid tails and 3d splashes. A romantic image of the sea and the possible wonders it may hold.
I drew freehand a wave shape, once I was happy with the shape I transferred this design onto sinamay, my chosen base material. To give the design structure I created a sinamay channel to hold the wire. Finding a silk scarf with the perfect colours I cut out my pattern to cover the sinamay. Tacking this in place I cut and sewed on the 3d wave splashes and mermaid tails. Choosing the placement of the corsage buckles I sewed them in place. Next I secured the edges of the silk. Using the remaining silk of the scarf I created my own bias binding to neaten the edges of my wave and to ensure cohesion to the design.
This sculptured creation is my interpretation of the element WATER, fluid, full of movement and mystery.
