HATalk Competition Entry 2024
Ranelle Larocque
Description
Water is ever-changing, shifting between calm and chaos. It flows freely as a liquid, freezes into solid ice, and transforms into a force that both gives life and takes it away. This duality – the beauty and power of water – inspired my headpiece.
I drew from the energy of crashing waves, a reminder that life’s circumstances can shift in an instant. One moment, you’re riding high on the crest of a wave, and the next, you’re pulled under. Yet, even in the storm, there is beauty.
I wanted to capture the dramatic movement of the sea, from the swirling undercurrents to the way light glimmers on stormy waters. To create depth and texture, I layered materials and added paint to mimic the fluid, ever-shifting nature of waves. Each element is designed to evoke the power and motion of the ocean.
Water has always resonated with me as a symbol of creativity – the ebb and flow of inspiration. As a milliner and small business owner, I often navigate opposing forces: the freedom of creative expression and the challenges of entrepreneurship. This headpiece reflects that tension, reminding us of water’s strength, fragility, and capacity to inspire.
