Name of Hat
Waterfall

Description

Inspired by a 1930s cloth hat, I was drawn to the silhouette of the hat because it feels like a funnel or a pathway in which a waterfall would flow through. I created my own ribbon by pleating satin strips and attaching them starting at the very top of the hat. The ribbon flows through the center of the hat form then reemerging out the front down the side right of the hat. This piece is all about the texture, flow, and feeling of water. I wanted it to feel as if you are standing under a waterfall as the water rushes over your head.

Techniques:

  • Draped the pattern on a head form.
  • Used canvas to flatline the hat to give it stiffness.
  • Lined with satin that was reused from a vintage coat.
  • Pleated the decoration/ ribbon.
  • Placed a small piece of elastic on the very edge of the hat, this helps the hat stay on the head.

Materials:

Velvet (upcycled from a garment)
Canvas
Upcycled satin(lining)
Elastic
Sheer craft ribbon
