HATalk Competition Entry 2024

Description
The hat design is inspired by water in its various forms – liquid, solid, and gas, each seamlessly integrating into our daily lives. This hat translates the abstract concept of water’s states into a tangible expression. Through diverse materials, it captures the fluidity of water, the solidity of ice, and the ethereal essence of vapor. The design accommodates all face shapes, with a silhouette suited to any angle – like water, adaptable and universally present. Embroidered with “GD” (Good Day), it symbolizes gratitude for water resources, a reminder that every day with water is a great day.
Techniques:
- Solid Form: The crown is covered with fabric over buckram blocking to represent the solid state of water, with openwork detailing for color contrast and added difficulty.
- Liquid Form: For the brim, hand-dyed sinamay crafted with a freehand technique creates a transparent, textured effect, mimicking flowing water.
- Gaseous Form: Recycled plastic is heated and molded freehand, capturing the essence of breaking waves and transparent vapor.
- Assembly: The inner lining uses hand-dyed sinamay to complement the hat’s outer colors.
- Finishing Touches: Adding a sweatband completes the piece.
