HATalk Competition Entry 2024

Description
Designing a hat that embodies the theme ‘water’ can be both creative and symbolic. Water, being a versatile and vital element, provides endless inspiration for artistic expression.
The choice of my colours, plays a crucial role in conveying the essence of water. Blues, ranging from deep navy to light aqua, can represent the various depths and moods of oceans and rivers. Turquoise and teal can evoke images of tropical waters, these colours have been an important part of my creation.
I have incorporated texture into my design by creating a pattern of swirls which reflect the movement and life of water. By thoughtfully combining colour and texture, I believe my hat design effectively conveys the theme of water.
Techniques:
- Blocked fosshape on a halo block
- Wired halo shape
- Covered halo shape with fabric
- Cut and edged each piece of abaca silk
- Cut and sewed blue beaded tulle onto one strip of abaca
- Made a ‘braid’ from ivory abaca and edged one strip of abaca
- Ironed abaca
- Sewed large zig zag stitches up and down each strip of abaca
- Ruched abaca to create a wave effect
- Sewed abaca pieces to halo

- Sewed on comb
- Decorated with crystals and pearls
