Projects / Bowl Beret

Project Overview

A library of hat blocks is a wonderful resource. Expanding your selection with alternatives to traditional blocks can be very helpful if you are on a budget, though. Plus, blocking hats on everyday items opens up new creative possibilities for designing unique shapes for your brand.

In this tutorial, Martine from Martine Henry Millinery shows you how to make a beret-style cocktail hat on a wooden bowl.

Martine used a vintage teak salad bowl she bought on an auction website to create her beret. To make a hat with a similar shape, look for a bowl with a curved edge. For reference, the dimensions of Martine’s bowl are as follows:

  • Circumference: 48.5 cm
  • Diameter: 14 cm
  • Height: approx 4 cm
