In this tutorial, Martine from Martine Henry Millinery shows you how to make a beret-style cocktail hat on a wooden bowl.
Martine used a vintage teak salad bowl she bought on an auction website to create her beret. To make a hat with a similar shape, look for a bowl with a curved edge. For reference, the dimensions of Martine’s bowl are as follows:
- Circumference: 48.5 cm
- Diameter: 14 cm
- Height: approx 4 cm

- Stiffened felt cone
- Scrap of stiffened felt
- Steamer
- Wooden bowl
- Cling film or plastic bag
- Petersham ribbon
- Matching thread
- Tape measure
- Sewing needle
- Scissors
- Pins/pegs
- Iron
- Firm millinery wire (e.g. 1.2 mm hard)
- Wire cutters
- Hat elastic
- Contact glue
