Hat Making Project

Embroidered Sinamay Fascinator

Create unique designs with free machine embroidery on sinamay.

Projects / Embroidered Sinamay Fascinator

Project Overview

Try this embroidered sinamay fascinator tutorial from British milliner Kerry Kernan to create a unique headpiece with leftover sinamay pieces.

Free machine embroidery is a fabulous technique and, when used in millinery, can really add to your designs. Although Kerry used quite strong colours for the sake of the photographs in this tutorial, tonal colours can also look really beautiful when used together.

This technique requires a sewing machine with the ability to drop the feed dogs. If you are unsure of how to drop your feed dogs, check your sewing machine manual before you start. Some machines may have a cover plate to cover the feed dogs instead of dropping them.

You will also need dissolvable fabric for this project. There are lots of different types on the market which will work for embroidering sinamay. Kerry’s personal favourite is Avalon Plus by Madeira.
