Projects / Habotai Silk Flower
Project Overview
Whether used as a trim or to make a floral headpiece, flowers offer endless creative possibilities for adding personality and bespoke customisation to your millinery designs.
In this tutorial, Martine from Martine Henry Millinery demonstrates how to make a colourful habotai silk flower using a two-step dyeing process that includes a traditional dye bath and felt tip pens. The result is a unique tie-dye effect. Jacquard dye was used for this project. If you haven’t used Jacquard dyes before, you can find guidance on preparing a dye bath in HATalk Issue 164.
Silk habotai works best for this “Sharpie tie-dye” technique. However, you might want to include some petals made of different fabrics to add extra interest to your flower. For these, you can use offcuts of any material you like. Just make sure that the pieces are big enough for tracing and cutting out some petals using your flower template.
