Project Overview

Make a lovely, delicate Lace Butterfly Fascinator, perfect for a flower girl (or anyone else who wants to sport this adorable look).

In this tutorial, Svetlana Faulkner of PresentPerfect Creations shows you how to create a delicate stiffened lace butterfly from scratch.

As well making beautiful headpieces, these butterflies can also be used in many other ways – from jewellery to home décor!

The lace butterfly here has been mounted onto a silk covered hair band and instructions for doing this are included with this fascinator project. Alternatively, you could mount your butterfly onto a hair clip, attach it to a brooch base or sew it directly onto a hat or fascinator.

What You Need

  • White crepe paper – Available from most craft stores. You will need a very thin 20cm strip to mask the joints of the butterfly. Alternatively, you can use a thin strip of pongee silk.
  • Wire – Paper wrapped wire used for sugar flower making will do fine. The best gauges are #26 or #28 for both the wings and the body. If you decide to make a smaller version of this butterfly, use #28 to keep it neat and delicate.
  • Silk for lining the butterfly and covering the headband – Use a light, 100% pure silk such as organza, pongee or light haboutai. I prefer organza for the lining and haboutai for wrapping around the headband, although you can use satin ribbon to cover the headband instead. Organza is crisp and stiff enough that you won’t need to stiffen it. Other varieties of silk linings may need to be stiffened.
  • Stiffened lace – It is easier to work with cotton blend lace fabric or trimming as it sticks faster but, with a bit of patience, any lace will do. The lace must be stiffened before you begin. I recommend using spray starch as it is easy to work with.
  • PVA glue – Any PVA glue will do but if you have a choice, go for a thicker, tackier fabric PVA as they seem to work better.
  • Ostrich feathers – To make a single butterfly, you will need 5-11 ostrich fronds. 9 were used to create the one pictured.
  • Cotton or polyester sewing thread
  • Headband or hair clip
  • Seed beads, embroidery pearls, etc. and beading tools – I suggest using #11 seed beads or other beads of a similar size. They are small but will stick well to the wire and give a nice finish to the body of the butterfly.
  • Plastic folder for spreading glue
  • Sharp scissors
  • Stiff brush/toothbrush for the glue
  • Small pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • Thin knitting needle or similarly shaped object – Metric 2.75/US 2/UK 12 knitting needles will work well.
  • Downloadable Template
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
